The alleged war criminal Guatemalan Jorge Sosa will have to wait at least two more days before knowing whether he will be released pending an extradition hearing.
Counsel briefly appeared before the Court of Queen's Bench in Calgary on Wednesday to determine whether or not Sosa could be released. A special hearing will be held Friday afternoon. Jorge Sosa is claimed by California, where he has violated the immigration laws of the United States by providing false statements under oath about his military past in his application for citizenship. He is also suspected of having led a military unit that massacred 252 men, women and children during an attack in a remote village in Guatemala in 1982. He was arrested Jan. 18 in Lethbridge, Alberta, where he lived. Sosa holds the Canadian and American citizenships. Guatemala has an extradition agreement with Canada, but he did not claim that Sosa is back in her country to face charges.
