The Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom announced Jan. 18 the extension for a period of thirty days of siege decreed in the north. This measure aims to promote the fight against drug traffickers, particularly those of Mexican Cartel Zetas, who hold under their control a large part of the department of Alta Verapaz to ensure a traffic channel to the U.S. . The newspaper said the siege could be imposed in other counties.
