Twenty-two suspected drug traffickers arrested in Guatemala

Twenty-two suspected drug traffickers were arrested and automatic weapons and planes were seized in Guatemala after a week of operations against Mexican drug cartels in Central America.

This wave of arrests - four on Sundays and eighteen last week - is the biggest blow to the Mexican gang 'Zetas' presence on nearly 75% of Guatemalan territory, officials said responsible for security. "These individuals were not only getting ready to fight the security forces, they attempted to take control of the country " said Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom, the press this week. The state of siege was declared last Dec. 19 in the state of Alta Verapaz in the north, which has to authorize the government to make arrests and supendre freedom of assembly and gathering for a month.
